Courses and Categories

Aotearoa Toa Ninja Warrior offers three distinct courses tailored to different skill levels: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Each course is designed to challenge competitors at their respective levels, ensuring a thrilling and fair competition for all. Whether you're new to ninja warrior or a seasoned competitor, there's a course suited to your abilities, allowing you to push your limits and showcase your skills on the national stage

Types of
Obstacles

Aotearoa Toa Ninja Warrior features a wide variety of obstacles that will test competitors' strength, agility, and endurance. From the iconic Warped Wall to the classic Quad Steps, each obstacle is designed to push competitors to their limits and provide an exciting challenge for participants. With obstacles inspired by the hit TV show and new challenges unique to Aotearoa Toa, this competition promises to be the ultimate test of ninja warrior skill and determination.

Flow Academy Venue

Aotearoa Toa Ninja Warrior will take place at the prestigious Flow Academy, a state-of-the-art facility designed to challenge and inspire ninja warriors of all levels. Featuring world-class obstacles and equipment, Flow Academy provides the perfect setting for competitors to showcase their skills and push their limits. With expert coaching and a supportive atmosphere, Flow Academy is the ultimate venue for the Aotearoa Toa Ninja Warrior competition.

  • Bookings are for 30 minutes to complete the course

  • Arrive 30 minutes early to check in and have a safety briefing

  • During the safety briefing the courses and obstacles will be explained in detail

  • Family friendly times are from 9am to 12pm Saturday and Sunday

  • Competitive athlete times are from 7.30pm -9.30pm

  • All athletes are welcome to book outside these recommended times

Age and Difficulty Categories, Course Obstacles

Information, and Physical Fitness Recommendations

All obstacles mentioned may or may not be included in the final Aotearoa Toa ninja course. Obstacles will be changed, removed, adapted, or replaced with a variety of different obstacles for all three levels of difficulty. The obstacle list is not confirmed and may change on the day of the competition. Obstacle difficulty levels and age recommendations are only a guide, and participants can register for any difficulty level.

Competition Categories:

All categories are divided into male, female and non binary

Juniors: Ages 8-12 years old

Youth: Ages 13-15 years old

Adult: Ages 16+ years old

Course Difficulty and Age Recommendations:

Blue course: Beginners level of fitness and age recommended 8-12 years old

Green Course: Intermediate level of fitness and age recommendation 13-15 years old

Red Course: The Advanced level of fitness and age recommended 16+ years old

Course Fitness Recommendations:

Fitness recommendations are more like guidelines, so you don't have to meet every single one to compete.

Beginners Fitness recommendations: Blue course

● Hang for up to 30 seconds

● Can jump 1 to 1.5 meters

● Can Rock climb Up to V0 or grade 15

● Can do the monkey bars

● Can rope pull up to 20KG

● Can reach the top of a quarter pipe skate ramp

Intermediate Fitness recommendations: Green Course

● Hang for up to 1 minute

● Can standing jump at or over 1.5 meters

● Can running stride at or over 1.5 meter distances

● Can rock climb V0-V3 or Grade 16 - 18

● Can skip monkey bars

● Can do a couple of double hand campus rungs or similar

● Can do a simple laché (swing, release and catch)

● Can rope pull up to 40kg

● Can reach the top of a half pipe skate ramp

● Can do a mantle or form of a climb up

Advanced Fitness recommendations: Red course

● Hang for over 1 minute

● Can standing jump over 2 meters

● Can running stride over 2 meters

● Can rock climb V4 or Grade 20 and above

● Can do brachiation on monkey bars (one arm at a time)

● Can do a standard double hand campus rungs or similar 5 or more times

● Can do a variety of laché (swing, release and catch)

● Can rope pull over 50kg

● Can do a 180 jump and catch from a cat hang/arm hang (Hanging in an arm

hang or cat hang (hands on the top edge of a block and feet touching the wall,

jump and spin 180 degrees and catch the top edge of the next block with hands

and feet on the wall)

● Can reach the top of a vert skate ramp, or complete a warped wall

● Can do a mantle or form of a climb up

Advanced RED Course Obstacle Description:

All advanced RED participants are only to use marked RED obstacles. Penalties will be given for touching BLUE or GREEN obstacles, touching the ground or safety mats.

1. Hanging Hooks: Swing from bar to bar using specially designed ninja hooks.

2. Quad Steps: Navigate a series of four slanted steps, often at varying heights and distances.

3. Short Slanted Wall: Climb up a short slanted wall

4. Weighted Rope Pull: Drag a weight towards you using a rope

5. Strides: Running jump between the low obstacles

6. Low Wall Climb Over: Scale a low wall, showcasing agility and strength.

7. Cliffhanger Edges: Traverse across narrow ledges using only fingertips, requiring exceptional grip strength and endurance.

8. Laché (Swing and Release Catches): Swing from one bar to another, releasing at the right moment to catch the next bar, demonstrating timing and coordination.

9. Tall slanted wall: Climb up a tall slanted wall.

10. Cat hang to cat leap return: Perform a cat leap return between a two boxes

11. Salmon Ladder or (Variation): Perform the classic Salmon Ladder or its variations, which involve lifting a bar up a series of rungs by performing pull-ups, showcasing explosive upper body strength.

12. Rope Swing: Swing from a rope to reach a platform or obstacle, demonstrating coordination and timing.

13. Spider Wall: Climb between two vertical walls, using opposing pressure with their hands and feet. The challenge involves moving horizontally along the walls, requiring balance, technique, and coordination.

14. Pipe Slider: Slide along a pipe or bar to reach a destination, demonstrating grip strength and coordination.

15. Warped Wall: Run up a curved wall and reach the top, showcasing speed, agility, and explosive leg strength. Climb over the top unassisted.

Intermediate GREEN Course Obstacle Description:

Changes and variations from the advanced course are made in italics. All advanced red obstacles are available for intermediate participants to use at their own will. Penalties will be given for touching BLUE obstacles, touching the ground or safety mats.

1. Hanging Hooks: Swing from bar to bar using specially designed ninja hooks.

2. Quad Steps: Navigate a series of four slanted steps, often at varying heights and distances, the tops of the steps can be held using hands.

3. Short Slanted Wall: Climb up a short slanted wall, with the aid of a rope.

4. Weighted Rope Pull, balance poles and beams: Drag a weight towards you using a rope. Additional balance poles and beams available for use.

5. Low Wall Climb Over: Scale a low wall, showcasing agility and strength.

6. Cliffhanger Edges: Traverse across ledges using hands and fingers, requiring some grip strength and endurance.

7. Lache (Swing and Release Catches): Swing from one bar to another, releasing at the right moment to catch the next bar, demonstrating timing and coordination.

8. Tall slanted wall: Climb up a tall slanted wall, with the aid of a rope or holds.

9. Box hop: Perform a jump between two boxes, a bar to assist is available.

10. Salmon Ladder or (Variation): Perform the classic Salmon Ladder or its variations, which involve lifting a bar up a series of rungs by performing pull-ups, showcasing explosive upper body strength.

11. Rope Swing: Swing from a rope to reach a platform or obstacle, demonstrating coordination and timing.

12. Spider Wall: Climb between two vertical walls, using opposing pressure with their hands and feet. The challenge involves moving horizontally along the walls, requiring balance, technique, and coordination. Some hand and foot holds will be available.

13. Pipe Slider: Slide along a pipe or bar to reach a destination, demonstrating grip strength and coordination.

14. Warped Wall: Run up a curved wall and reach the Hanging ring, showcasing speed, agility, and explosive leg strength. Climb over the top using the rope or ladder.

Beginner BLUE Course Obstacle Description:

Changes and variations from the advanced and intermediate course are made in italics. All advanced red obstacles and intermediate green obstacles are available for beginner participants to use at their own will. Penalties will be given for touching the ground or safety mats.

1. Hanging Hooks: Swing from bar to bar using specially designed ninja hooks. Foot holds available to allow for a traverse.

2. Quad Steps: Navigate a series of four slanted steps, often at varying heights and distances, the tops of the steps can be held using hands, some steps have extra foot bridges to assist in the distance between steps.

3. Short Slanted Wall: Climb up a short slanted wall, with the aid of a rope.

4. Weighted Rope Pull, balance poles and beams: Drag a weight towards you using a rope. Additional balance poles and beams available for use.

5. Low Wall Climb around: traverse a low wall, using the holds if needed.

6. Monkey Bars or rings: Traverse across monkeys bars or rings using hands and fingers, requiring some grip strength.

7. Tall slanted wall: Climb up a tall slanted wall, with the aid of a rope or holds.

8. Box hop: Perform a jump between two boxes, a bar to assist is available.

9. Rope Swing: Swing from a rope to reach a platform or obstacle, demonstrating coordination and timing.

10. Spider Wall: Climb between two vertical walls, using opposing pressure with their hands and feet. The challenge involves moving horizontally along the walls, requiring balance, technique, and coordination. Hand and foot holds will be available.

11. Pipe Slider: Slide along a pipe or bar to reach a destination, demonstrating grip strength and coordination.

12. Warped Wall: Run up a curved wall and reach the Hanging ring, showcasing speed, agility, and explosive leg strength. Climb over the top using the ladder.

 

Aotearoa Toa Ninja Warrior Competition Rules

General Rules:

  • Athletes must have completed a waiver for Flow

  • Athletes are responsible for knowing, understanding, and following the Competition Rules.

  • Athletes must accept and comply with the Terms and Conditions.

Conduct:

  • Show respect towards all event officials and other users of the course.

  • Obey all instructions from marshals and officials.

  • Practise good sportsmanship at all times.

  • No pushing or unsportsmanlike conduct.

  • No attempt to gain an unfair advantage.

  • Athletes must be drug and alcohol free whilst taking part in this event.

Equipment:

  • Complete the event with all clothing and gear they start with.

  • Shoes must be worn for the entirety of the course.

  • No headphones, cell phones, or music devices while competing.

  • Do not tamper with race obstacles or equipment.

Did not start or finish:

  • Inform organisers if unable to start after checking in

  • Inform organisers if unable to finish after starting.

Disqualifications and Appeals:

  • Failure to comply with rules may result in disqualification.

  • Appeals regarding penalties or results must be brought to the Head Official within 30 minutes of the course ending.

  • Aotearoa Toa reserves the right to change race standings or decisions post-event.

Obstacle, Course Rules and Scoring

  • Course, obstacles types of attempts, assistance, and penalties vary based on the course type.

  • All obstacles can be attempted up to 3 times

  • Obstacles have specific completion rules including requirements for reaching checkpoints.

  • Your referee will explain the check points for each obstacle, such as; completing an obstacle in control, touching a specific piece of equipment such as a crash mat, landing platform or hanging obstacle.

  • Obstacles must be attempted with an honest attempt to complete them.

  • If after 3 honest attempts the obstacle is still incomplete it will be marked with a DNC for that obstacle.

  • After a DNC you will be moved forward by the referee to the start of the next checkpoint.

  • No outside assistance except in the case of injury or medical emergency or non competitive athletes on Green course and Blue Courses.

Course Rules:

  • Athletes must stick to their designated course. Cutting the course is not permitted and will result in an attempt being used.

  • Referees will explain what can and can’t be used for each obstacle.

  • Red course athletes may only use the Red coloured obstacles.

  • Green course athletes can use Green and Red coloured obstacles

  • Blue course athletes can use Blue, Green and red coloured obstacles

Practising the course:

  • Some or all of the course may be accessed prior to the event for participants to practise during open sessions or booking time slots at flow

  • On the day of the competition if time allows; athletes may be given an allotted amount of time to inspect and try obstacles on the course, during this time be respectful of others and the conduct rules still apply.

  • In some instances there may be no time to practise the course.

Scoring:

  • Placings will be in order of: Number of Attempts on obstacles then Total Time

  • For example Athlete A completes the entire course in 3:35 with 3 total obstacle attempts across the course

  • Athlete B competes the entire course in 3:12 with 5 total obstacle attempts

  • Athlete A is placed 1st and Athlete B is placed 2nd 

  • Places will be given for each age group category in each course for Males, Female and Non Binary athletes
